Tanzania’s new president John Magufuli was sworn in yesterday at Uhuru Park, Dar Es Salaam after having a successful win in the recent national elections held in Tanzania.
The new president took over from Jakaya Kikwete, who served two terms before opting for retirement. Just like the former president, Magufuli was elected on a CCM party, which has governed the East African country since independence in 1961.
However just like many countries, the opposition coalition had planned to boycott the inauguration and had threatened to hold nationwide demonstrations but this did not happen.
Anyway Magufuli and his vice were sworn in successfully with no issues and security threats. The 56 year old president also gave a brief speech to thank the Tanzanians for the support and trust they showed in his during the elections.
He said,
It’s now time for us to unite and put our ideological differences aside. I will work hard for all Tanzanians regardless of their tribal, religious or ideological affiliations.Anyway the African head of states who availed themselves include South African President Jacob Zuma, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, Benjamin Mkapa and president Uhuru Kenyatta.
